FAQs

Do I need to be "good" at art to try art therapy?

No, you do not need any previous art experience to engage in art therapy, just a curious and open mind. Art therapy focusses on the creative process and expression as opposed to a finished or "good" piece of art. Sometimes art therapy can be most effective when clients have no prior experience and can create without pressure. Where necessary, I will provide prompts or guidance on effective ways to use materials, and you will be allowed to experiment and explore in order to find the right fit for you.

How will my information and artwork be stored?

Artwork made during in-person sessions will be stored safely in a locked cupboard within the therapy space which can only be accessed by myself, and returned at the end of therapy for you to take away or dispose of. Artwork made during online sessions will need to be stored by yourself in a safe space. Any information you share with me during a therapy session is strictly confidential. Confidentiality is only every broken if you tell me that you or someone else is at risk of harm or criminal activity in line with the British Association of Art Therapists confidentiality and safeguarding guidelines. If this is the case, I will be open and honest about the need for me to break confidentiality. Information about you will be stored securely for 6 years following completion of therapy before being destroyed.

How many sessions should I have?

The number of sessions you have depends on your individual requirements and can be discussed and reviewed ongoingly. Some clients like to schedule an initial block of sessions, particularly if they have specific things they would like to work on. Others prefer not to set an ending and attend ongoingly for continued support until therapy is no longer required. It is important to remember that it can take time to build the therapeutic relationship and feel comfortable, so this should be factored in when considering sessions.

If my child attends sessions, what information will you share with me?

It is important that children and young people are able to express their thoughts and emotions in a safe and confidential space. Anything discussed during therapy sessions with a child or young person will remain confidential unless anything is disclosed which indicates that the child or another person is at risk of harm. On occasion it may be appropriate to invite a parent or carer into a session or share information via a phone call with the consent of the young person.

How do I know that art therapy is right for me, or if you are the right therapist for me?

It is important that you feel comfortable with a therapist and that you are the right fit for each other to ensure that you can work effectively together. Prior to sessions starting, I offer a free 20-minute telephone or Zoom consultation so that we can discuss what support is required, answer any questions you may have, and provide any information which will help you with your decision regarding whether to go ahead or not. Sessions can initially be booked on a weekly basis so that if you decide that art therapy is not right for you, you are free to end sessions.

Are sessions appropriate for people with additional needs?

During our initial consultation it will be possible to discuss any additional needs or special requirements you may have, and how I can adapt sessions to ensure that they are accessible. As someone who values inclusivity I am able to tailor sessions to support the individual needs of each client, taking into consideration any communication barriers or needs, sensory sensitivities, or practical requirements.

What facilities are available at The Changing Rooms, and is the building accessible?

The Changing Rooms has onsite parking directly outside, and is wheelchair accessible, although for larger wheelchairs or mobility scooters access would need to be explored prior to booking. The building and therapy rooms are on ground level, and has accessible toilets as well as a waiting area.

What happens if I cannot attend my session?

It is understandable that clients may need to miss or cancel sessions from time to time. If you need to cancel an appointment I ask that you allow three working days notice. Missed sessions or cancellations made with less notice will need to be charged at the full rate of the session. If an emergency, illness, or personal reason arises within the three working days please contact me to discuss the fee and if possible I will try to find an alternative time for you.
